Martha Asbery

She was baptised 11 September 1842 at Braithwell, a daughter of George Asbery and Ann formerly Skelton.

In 1861, she was at home with her parents in the High Street, Rotherham (1st Court, 2nd House, after 9 High Street) aged 18, a dressmaker, born at Braithwell.

Martha married Benjamin Milnes 20 September 1865 in the Register Office at Rotherham. Benjamin was aged 23, a bachelor and forge man of The Holmes, a son of Benjamin Milnes, a forge man. Martha was aged 23 and a spinster of High Street, Rotherham, a daughter of George Asbery, a carter. The witnesses were Edwin Ball and John J. Mycock.

In 1871, at 23 Sarah Street, Masbrough, Benjamin was aged 28, a foreman in steelworks, born at Kimberworth. His wife, Martha, was aged 28 and born at Braithwell. Their children were Benjamin A. aged 5, George H. aged 4 and John W. aged 1, all born at Kimberworth.

In 1881, at 41 Regent Street, Kimberworth, Benjamin Milnes was aged 38, a steel works manager and born at Holmes. Martha was aged 38 and born at Bramley and their children were John W. aged 11 born at Masbrough, Mary A, aged 8, Martha A. aged 6, Alfred E. aged 3 and Walter aged 1, all born at Holmes (a region of Rotherham).

In 1891, at 65 Regent Street, Kimberworth, Benjamin was aged 48, a foreman steelworks (employee) and born at Holmes. His wife, Martha, was aged 48 and born at Braithwell. Their children were John W. aged 21, a stove grate fitter (employee) born at Masbrough, Martha A. aged 16, Alfred E. aged 13, Walter aged 11 and Beatrice aged 9, all born at Holmes.

In 1901, at 69 Regent Street, in Rotherham, Martha was aged 58, and born at Bramley, Rotherham and Benjamin was aged 58, a foreman steel warehouse (worker) and born in Rotherham. Their children were Alfred E. aged 23, a railway clerk (worker), Walter aged 21 a grocer's assistant (for John Asbery perhaps?) and Beatrice aged 19, all born at Rotherham.

Benjamin died 13 December 1908 aged 66 and Martha died 11 February 1929 aged 86. They were buried with their daughter Beatrice at St Thomas Kimberworth.

Martha and Benjamin's children were:

  1. Benjamin Asbery, born about 1865 (registered March quarter 1866 Rotherham district) and buried 14 March 1881 at St Thomas Kimberworth, aged 15, of Regent Street.
  2. George Henry, born about 1867 (registered March quarter 1867 Rotherham district) and buried 29 September 1875 at St Thomas Kimberworth, aged 8, of Kimberworth.
  3. John William, born about 1869 at Masbrough (registered September quarter 1869 Rotherham district). In 1897 he married Hannah Stacey (1872 - 1944). John and Hannah's child was:
    1. Cyril (1898 - 1980). He married Elsie Walker (1897 - 1972. They had two children.

  4. Francis, born about 1871 (registered September quarter 1871 Rotherham district) and buried 4 February 1872, at St Thomas Kimberworth, an infant of Kimberworth, (aged 6 months (?) on the gravestone).
  5. Mary Ann, born about 1872 at Holmes (registered December quarter 1872 Rotherham district).
  6. Martha Alice, born about 1874 at Holmes (registered December quarter 1874 Rotherham district).
  7. Alfred Emison, born about 1877 at Holmes (Alfred Edward registered September quarter 1877 Rotherham district).
  8. Walter, born about 1879 at Holmes (registered December quarter 1879 or March quarter 1880 Rotherham district). He was died 24 July 1905 and was buried at St Thomas Kimberworth, aged 25.
  9. Beatrice, born about 1881 at Holmes. She died 24 May 1959 aged 77.
  10. Herbert, born about 1884 (registered September quarter or December quarter 1884 Rotherham district), buried 15 November 1889 at St Thomas Kimberworth, aged 5 of Regent Street.
