Mary Jane Asbery

She was baptised 8 September 1840 at Braithwell, a daughter of George Asbery and Ann formerly Skelton.

In 1861, she was at home with her parents in the High Street, Rotherham (1st Court, 2nd House, after 9 High Street) aged 21, a dressmaker, born at Braithwell.

In the census of 1871, at Searle Yard, High Street, Rotherham, Mary Jane was aged 29, housekeeper to her father and born in Bramley.

She married John William Gandy, her first cousin, in the September quarter of 1871, in the Sculcoates district.

In the 1881 census of 11 Cannon Street, Sculcoates, Mary Jane was aged 40. John William Gandy, her husband, a grocer and general dealer, was aged 40 and born in Sheffield. Their children were Henry Ernest aged 8, Jane Edith aged 5, William S. aged 4, and Emma G. aged 2.

In 1891 at 12 John's Place, Sculcoates (Kingston upon Hull) Mary J Gandy was aged 50, born at Bramley. Her husband was John W Gandy, aged 50, a commission agent general provisions, born at Sheffield. With them were their children Harry E. aged 18, a pupil teacher, Jane E. aged 15, William S. aged 14, an office boy and Emma G. aged 12, all born in Hull.

In the 1901 census of 4 Shakespeare Street, Sculcoates, (Kingston Upon Hull) Mary J. Gandy was aged 60 and John W. Gandy was aged 60, a grocer shopkeeper. Their children were Harry E., married, aged 28, a professor of music [i.e. a music teacher], William S. aged 24, clerk [at a ] timber merchants and Emma G. aged 22, a packer [at a] Drugs and Drysalters. With them was Gertrude (daughter in law) aged 24, born at Driffield and Doris E. (granddaughter) aged 9 months.

Mary Jane and John's children were

  1. Henry Ernest, birth registered March quarter 1873 in the Sculcoates district. He married Gertrude Daltry in the March quarter 1900 in the Sculcoates district. Henry and Gertrude's child was Doris E., born in summer 1900 at Hull.
  2. George Skelton, birth and death (aged 0) both registered in the June quarter of 1874 in the Sculcoates district.
  3. Jane Edith, birth registered in the December quarter of 1875 in the Sculcoates district. In the 1881 census she was at home, aged 5 and born in Hull. In the 1901 census she was unmarried and at her aunt, Emma Lowe's house, at 41 Frederick Street Rotherham; aged 25 and born in Hull, with her daughter, Jessie, aged 4, born in Rotherham.
  4. William S., born about 1876/7 in Hull.
  5. Emma G., born about 1878/9 in Hull.
