The Family of Sarah Asbery

She was born 20 April 1810 and baptised 20 May 1810 at Braithwell. She was a daughter of George Asbery and Ann formerly Casthaven.

She had a daughter by Joseph Sybary, Alice Barbara, baptised 5 May 1833 at Braithwell.

She had a son by Charles Gervise, Joseph, baptised 10 April 1836 at Braithwell.

In 1841, at Bramley, next to her father and aunt, Sarah Ellis was aged 30-34. With her were John Ellis aged 30-34 a labourer and her two illegitimate children Alice Asbery aged 8 and Joseph Asbery aged 6. All were born in the county.

In 1851 at Bramley, in the household of her father and aunt, Sarah Ellis was aged 40 and born at Bramley with her unmarried daughter Alice Barbra Assbury (house servant crossed out) aged 18 and born at Maltby. Her husband, John Ellis, was aged 41, a quarry labourer born at Wickersley, and their daughters, Ann Ellis and Elizabeth Ellis were aged 6 and 4 and both were born at Bramley.

Sarah's children were:

  1. Alice Barbara.
  2. Joseph. In 1881 at Cottage, Bramley, Joseph (Asbery) was aged 45, a farm labourer, born at Bramley. His wife, Margret, was aged 42 and born in Ireland. Their son, Frederick, was aged 19, a quarry mason's apprentice and born at York. In the 1901 census index, Frederick was living at Trimdon, Durham, aged 41, a limestone quarryman, born at Garroby, York (Garrowby is close to Bugthorpe). He may have married Millicent (who was 55 in the 1901 census index and born Thistle Hill, Yorks.) and had a son, William Arthur, born about December 1900 at Trimdon (1901 census index, registered March quarter 1901 in the Sedgefield district). Registered in the December quarter 1902 in the Sedgefield district was a John Wilfred. There is a death registration for a Frederick A. Asbery in the Sedgefield district in the September quarter 1936 (10a 153). He was aged 76.

  4. Ann, born about 1844 at Bramley. In 1851 she was at home with her parents aged 6. In 1861 she was a general servant in her uncle William's inn, aged 16, born at Bramley.
  5. Elizabeth, born about 1846 at Bramley. In 1851 she was at home with her parents aged 4. In 1871 she was a servant in her aunt, Caroline's inn, aged 24 and born at Bramley.
