She was born 3 December 1882 at 11 Prospect Terrace, Normanton, Yorks to George Johnson and Elizabeth late West formerly Baines. George registered the birth and gave his name as George Edward Johnson, a coal miner.

In the 1891 census, living at 25 Newcastle Street, Hucknall under Huthwaite, Sutton in Ashfield, Notts, she was with her mother, aged 8, born at Normanton, Yorks.

In 1901 she was living with her mother at Darley Bank, St Thomas, Rotherham, aged 18 and born at Normanton.

She married Albert Poole at the Register Office, Rotherham, on 23 November 1901. She was aged 18, a spinster of 50 Pembroke Street, Holmes, Rotherham, the daughter of George Johnson (deceased), a "deputy at colliery". Albert was aged 22, a bachelor and coal miner of the same address, the son of George Poole (deceased) a blacksmith. The witnesses were Thomas A Wragg and Fred Sydney Butcher.

She is thought to have moved towards Blackburn (Blackpool?) and was connected with a Caravan Company and may have spent time in America.
